Happy 2018 | My Goals For The Year Ahead.

I can't actually believe I am writing a post like this again. It is absolutely insane how fast 2017 flew by, and what a crazy year it was! (Read about my year here.) I left work for the Christmas holidays in desperate need for a break and some time back home, and now I feel refreshed, determined and I am so, so excited for what 2018 holds. I always enjoy making myself some goals and resolutions, and definitely see the new year as a fresh start. So this is what I'd love to achieve over the next 12 months...

1. Focus on my career

2017 was definitely the year of the career for me. In January I left my freelance job in London with an abundance of skills but also a knot of uncertainty in my stomach, as I had no job and absolutely no clue what the future would hold. In 2017 I landed a job that I truly love at the BBC and have secured myself a promotion so that I’m exactly where I want to be career wise, and I couldn’t be prouder. I want to continue developing my skills in a professional environment this year, striving to push and challenge myself creatively and I want to learn and achieve as much as I possibly can within the production I’m working on. The hard work really does start now!

2. Start to save for my own home

Along with a new job came a new home, and I cannot express to you how much I adore living in my little flat in the middle of the city. It’s homely, clean, cosy and all I’ve ever wanted in a first home, but my god it’s expensive. Renting is outrageously costly and I’d love to get on the property ladder so that my hard earned cash is going into my own future and not lining someone else’s pocket. I’m going to start saving up for a mortgage with Dan and I’m hoping that by the end of the year we will have at least enquired about buying our first home together. Plus, the sooner we get our own space the sooner we can get ourselves a little dog!! (If that's not a reason to get saving I don't know what is!)

3. Join a running club…

I’ve blogged before about how I’ve been striving to get back to the fitness level I was at while studying for my final year of my undergraduate degree, and I feel as though I’m finally heading back to that point. I’ve been training hard and trying to eat as healthily as possible, and I’ve definitely seen positive results, though my healthy schedule fell by the wayside over Christmas due to the excessive amount of food eaten and the fact I've been mowed down by the flu. But I know that one way I can continue to work on this is by joining a running club. For me, running is the best way to keep in shape and its something I’ve grown to enjoy, but I find the thud of my gym trainers on the treadmill so tedious and I’m desperate to get outside into the fresh air to up my distance. I’ve found a local running club that meets up weekly in Cardiff, and runs around the beautiful parks that are a mere ten minute walk from my flat. I’m determined to join up and go each week. It’s a step outside of my comfort zone, but I’m very excited to get started.

4. …And finally sign up and complete a half marathon

This has been on my goals list for a few years now, but my crazy work/study schedule has always prevented me from finding the time to train properly to complete one. This year, I’m determined it will be different. Now that I’ve got a little more stability when it comes to my work routine, it means I can join a running club and I definitely have time to build up my running stamina and strength in order to complete a half marathon. I’m hoping to do the Cardiff Half Marathon in October, which means I have a good ten months to train up to compete. I’m also hoping to raise some money for worthwhile causes in the process, and I’m dragging my mum into my plans for moral support too!

5. Be mindful of my health

Without sounding overly-cocky, one of my best traits is my go-go-go attitude. I am always hungry for success, I like pushing myself and I strive to be better. However, that often means working myself to the ground and it really impacted my health in 2017. Coming down with mumps at the height of summer definitely made me realise that I need to slow down, and being ill again a few weeks ago with a sickness bug and virus was my body’s way of showing me (once again) that I need to stop pushing myself to the limit. I'm even sat writing this with the flu. I’m determined to look after myself more this year, and I’ve definitely learned to say no over the last few weeks, which is a start!

6. Join a library

No, you’re not reading the blog of a sixty-year-old woman. I love reading, I don’t do enough of it, and that’s something I want to change in 2018. So why not join my local library? It’s a great way to find books I wouldn’t necessarily have thought of reading before, and when I do splurge on a new reading stash I’m spending lots of money that could be popped into the mortgage fund. It’s as simple as that.

7. Travel more

It feels kind of ironic writing this because I’ve lived out of a suitcase for the best part of the year working in television, but while I’ve travelled the length and breadth of the UK with work, I would like to see more of the world if I have the opportunity. Being ill over the summer this year meant my travel plans were somewhat quashed. I missed out on a trip abroad with friends, and it also meant that my holiday with Dan ended up being a little autumn break, so I’d love to report back at the end of 2018 that I’ve hopped on a plane and jet setted across the globe to somewhere new and exciting.

8. Make better choices, starting with Meat-Free Mondays

I just completed the first Meat-Free Monday of the year and I am feeling good. I've wanted to make healthier food choices for a while, and I've been learning more about vegetarianism and veganism over the past few weeks. I just think it will be better for me and for the planet in general, but I'm not sure I will be able to give up meat completely so I'm doing it one step at a time. I'm going meat-free every Monday, and I'm also going to try and choose vegetarian options where I can. I'm not a huge meat-eater anyway, so I won't miss it too much, but it's just a little change that I hope will make a difference.

I hope everyone's 2018 is bloody fantastic!
Wishing you all the health, happiness and luck in the world.
Lots of love. xoxo

  1. Lovely goals! Congratulations on the awesome career!! And good luck with the savings. I joined my local library back in 2016 and it's so good, it's unlike anywhere, it gets me out of the house between work and chillin, and I'm never at risk of bumping into anyone I know so I can have proper me time :')

YES to joining a running club. im being a bit of a stubborn bastard and avoiding my usual gym classes for most of january because of all the new starters (bloody good on 'em tho!) so ive decided to take up running in the interim! dont think im quite ready to take on a half marathon tho - good luck! im also trying to eat a lot less meat in january, something ive been meaning to do for ages but have got the much needed kick up the backside with new year and all!

  6. I think meat free Monday is such a great way of eating more veggies - it's all about balance and baby steps, in my opinion! It'll open up a wonderful world of new recipes for you too - when I became vegetarian I fell in love with cooking all over again as suddenly I found all these new dishes I never knew about! x

  11. Another thing you should consider at the start of your career, is to write a diary. One of my regrets is that in many years of travelling, I’ve been to some fantastic places and met some amazing people, but can I remember them all ? No. You may think it’s a chore, but I can guarantee in years to come you will get great pleasure from being reminded of those events.
